Description
The seller acquired this 1972 DeTomaso Pantera in January 1993 from Mayberry Lincoln Mercury of North Hollywood. Subsequent cosmetic and mechanical work, which began in 2004, involved a color change to Flying Yellow, a black leather interior reupholstery, the installation of a Precision Pro-Formance bolt-on chassis kit and Aldan adjustable coilovers, and the replacement of various components as detailed below. The overbored 351-cubic-inch Ford Cleveland V8 was rebuilt in 1990 and is equipped with an Edelbrock carburetor and intake manifold, a Ford Motorsport camshaft, hydraulic crane lifters, Isky valve springs, an MSD ignition, and a Hall exhaust system with large-bore headers. Inside, the bucket seats are complemented by Deist Safety four-point harnesses, a MOMO steering wheel, and Veglia instruments. Gear changes are made via a five-speed ZF closed-gear manual transmission, and additional equipment includes pop-up headlights and power windows, as well as a Fluidyne aluminum radiator with electric fans. This pre-L Pantera is now offered with a Marti Deluxe report, a service history, four 15-inch Campagnolo wheels, and a collection of spare and removed parts, along with a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The Pantera’s bodywork was designed under the direction of American designer Tom Tjaarda. This particular example left the factory with a limed finish and was stripped down to bare metal and repainted in Fly Yellow in the mid-2000s. Details include pop-up headlights, bright window trim, and chrome side mirrors. Work in 2025 involved reinstalling the windshield wipers and bright bumpers.
The 17-inch staggered-width Campagnolo-style wheels are fitted with Continental Extreme Contact DW 225/50 tires at the front and 285/40 at the rear. In 2005, Precision Pro-Formance of Brea, California, installed a bolt-on chassis kit, replacement rear suspension struts, Aldan adjustable coilovers, and new suspension bushings. The car uses power-assisted disc brakes with rebuilt Wilkinson calipers on all four corners.
The dashboard, center console, and individual seats were reupholstered in black leather, and yellow four-point Deist Safety harnesses were added by the current owner. The door panels have replacement black vinyl, while the floors are lined with gray velour. Further details include tinted windows and power windows. The seller states that the car retains its original air conditioning system and ivory headliner, although the air conditioning is not currently functional. The power window motor and gearbox were replaced in 2022.
